Social Media Success is Not Inside the Box

This really struck me because I’ve been working on writing a blog post about the very topic of how content suffers when we get hung up on all the “rules”. What Mr. Ullah is describing is true for blogging and posting. There are so many articles out there talking about social media strategy and the science of it, that sometimes the quality of the content is buried under following the guidelines of posting and SEO. Strategy is very important but not as important as good content.
It’s my nature to want to think outside of the box. The videos, posts and images that go viral are not posts on the everyday happenings at a business. Check out the links below. You’ll notice that some of the photos are not even about the business that put up the post. For example, Olde Towne Antiques and Upholstery posted an old black and white still shot from The Wizard Of Oz with the simple caption “How many of you recognize this old classic movie?”. They received over one million likes and almost 90 thousand comments! Their followers obviously appreciate classics and antiques but were probably ready to see something besides the latest reupholstered chair. Olde Town appealed to their followers’ interests and put up an image with a question that screamed for engagement and shares.
I’m not saying to ignore the important science of analytics and industry news. Use that information to push unique, high-quality content. Post about upcoming events, sales, new inventory, and milestones. That is all information that your followers want to know about your business but work on developing posts that will surprise your followers. Remember to think about what you would want to see in your timeline. If it doesn’t interest you then don’t post it because it probably won’t interest your followers either.
