Thanksgiving yields to Black Friday, which is followed by Small Business Saturday and then a day of rest. Next up is Cyber-Monday and now a new event…Giving Tuesday.
The premise is wonderful. On Tuesday, November 27th, now the official opening day of the charitable giving season, everyone is challenged to think of his or her favorite or new charity. The official site has this to say about the event:
“We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. This year help create #GivingTuesday™, the giving season’s opening day. On Tuesday November 27, 2012 charities, families, businesses and individuals are coming together to transform the way people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.
It’s a simple idea. Find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to join in acts of giving. Tell everyone you can about what you are doing and why it matters. Join a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity. And together we’ll create ways to give more, give better and give smarter.”
So, we encourage you to make some choices. The Giving Tuesday site has plenty of suggestions of reputable organizations to give to. We suggest: your local or state foodbank (ours is Montana Foodbank Network) or the deaf women our cousin works with in Kenya who make beautiful jewelry (Sasa Designs).
Either way, get out and give, and remember to spread the word so that this important event gets a fraction of the coverage that the other deal days receive. Facebook, Tweet, shout it from the mountaintop!
