"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do; forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize of which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." ~Philippians 3:12-14

These are some of my favorite in verses in the Bible. And at the start of a new year, these words are especially appropriate.

Behind Us:
All of us have things behind us that need to stay behind us. If you're anything like me, your thoughts may often return to situations, conversations, regrets and problems from the past.

Why do we do that? Rehashing old issues isn't going to fix anything. The best thing we can do with the past is learn from it and then leave it.

I also have a tendency to hang on to past successes, like some kind of trophy. I have to frequently remind myself of this thought: If I hold too tightly the accomplishments of yesterday, I miss out on what God has for me today.

Before Us:
Ahead of us lies the unknown, and sometimes that can be a little scary. We can take comfort in the fact that God is already there.

I want my life to count for God and His kingdom. Like Paul, I look forward to pressing on to what lies ahead. Looking forward makes so much more sense then looking backward.

I want to know Christ better this year than last. The only way to do that is to march forward in the direction I sense Him telling me to go.

Time ticks on. We can either let it move ahead without us while we live in the past, or we can move with it, pressing on to take hold of the things God has in store for us.

Press on!
