So I guess I have an addictive personality. First I was an obsessive extreme couponer, completely preoccupied in clipping, printing, organizing, and running to stores 20 times or more per week. Now, I am hooked on gems. I consider both of those “good” addictions in comparison to drugs or alcohol. Whatever the case, I’m addicted.
Lately, I have been obsessed with gem-mining. I live in western North Carolina, which is well-known for hundreds of different gems and minerals. Also, North Carolina is the only state where you will find emeralds. I think everyone in this state has heard about the guy who dug up an emerald worth 3.5 million dollars about twenty years or so ago. A boy found one at a gem mine that was worth $50-$60,000 too!
I have been inspired to find some valuable gems. It started with my interest in the healing powers of gems, which is another huge reason that I love digging. I have found rose quartz, smoky quartz, and green, yellow, and blue aventurine in bucket fulls! I have also found obsidian, garnet, ruby and zoisite, jasper, dalmatian jasper, etc! I am hooked!
This past Sunday, my husband and I were lucky enough to try digging. We found a bunch of quartz but no cigar. I am phening for more though.
A lot of holes looked like this in that they were already dug. We dug into those a little and also started a few of our own holes. The problem is this: there aren’t enough hours in the day. And the fact that as humans, we get tired and hungry, also tends to damper the excitement.
I have been posting some pics of the gems we have found on Instagram. Follow me @ TheUnextreme!
