To-date my most favorite volunteer work has been serving food at Vacation Bible School (VBS). As a parent, I worried about my child and make sure they are clean and fed before they go anywhere. I have learned over the last few summers not all parents fill that way.
Growing up a snack at VBS was three round cookies and a half a cup of sugarless kool-aid. Now they are served full meals with options of entrees. This is not just at my church, but also at other churches in the community. I’m not sure if the parents know this or just didn’t feed their kids at all during the day. What I am sure of is there was close to 75 very hungry children standing in front of me for six days (Yes, we have a Long VBS week!) Making enough food to give them all a decent meal wasn’t that hard. Our church loves to eat and a lots a large amount of money for the food budget. Giving these kids seconds, thirds, and a snack to take home is the biggest challenge.
I enjoy seeing and speaking with each one of them as they come through the food line. Many ask for the fruit and fresh veggies instead of chips and cookies. This makes me smile! I wouldn’t have made such good choices at their age and probably still wouldn’t as an adult. Each year, I see how much these children have grown and I am happy that I have had a small hand in molding some of the bright young minds of tomorrow.
