If your're looking for a great place to get away this fall I would love to suggest Mackinaw City, Michigan. We have made this trip many different years and we have enjoyed it more and more each time.

There is something for everyone in Mackinaw from shopping and historical sites to beautiful scenery and nature.  I guarantee you will LOVE it, whether you go as a family or on a romantic weekend!

One of our favorite things to visit is the outdoor shopping mall. In fall, the end of the season, you can get some really fantastic deals.  We have to have dinner at the Dixie Saloon.  They have great food and it is a gorgeous building and decor. It sits at the very head of Dixie Hwy (hence the name) that travels all the way to Florida.

We ALWAYS stay at the LIGHTHOUSE VIEW MOTEL ran by Rick and Melanie Kelso.  It's a beautiful, clean hotel (and you know how hard those are to find these days!) that sits right across the street from the Mackinac Point Lighthouse and the Mackinaw Bridge which are both wonderful views each on their own but you get two for the price of one here!  Their rates are very reasonable, very clean (cannot be stated enough, read my last post here!), they have an indoor pool and are American Owned and Operated!  Need I say more!

The gem of this trip is Mackinac Island which is just a short ferry ride away.  There are several to choose from but I suggest ARNOLD FERRY they are reasonable ($18 adult and $9 children round trip) and they even have a shuttle that will pick you up at your hotel.  It's about a 30 to 40 minute ride by ferry and I suggest in the fall you wear some warmer clothing but nothing to drastic.

Once you land on the island it is like stepping foot back in time.  There are no motorized vehicles allowed anywhere on the island. Everything is delivered by ferry then horse and carriage.  It is a beautiful place that will relax you instantly.

You have 3 choices for getting around the 8 mile island.  Carriage ride and here is the link to Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, You can rent a bicycle but even though I don't have a link to this they are situated right outside the ferry terminal so it very easy to find.  It is an easy 8 mile ride (I know that doesn't sound right: easy and 8 mile) but it is basically all flat and with the amazing views and stopping places all around it wasn't hard on any of us. (Except my husband who somehow managed to wreck his, wheelies are not suggested!) You can also choose to walk and we have done this before too but we always prefer the bicycles and they can be rented easily.

While on  the island we love to visit Pat Sinclair's Pub for lunch.  The food is terrific and the prices are good too! The name has been recently changed to Huron Street Pub and Grill.

You MUST visit the GRAND HOTEL.  It is amazing!  Believe me, you won't miss it.  You can tour this crown jewel that has had many famous guest, from Presidents to movie stars!  One of these days I am going to splurge and stay a night here but I love just visiting it as well.
