At a recent event held by the San Francisco chapter of "Girls in Tech," women were treated to a unique perspective on the balance between "Love and Money." That was, in fact, the title of the seminar by family lawyer Monica Mazzei and certified financial advisor Michelle Soto.
"Girls In Tech", an organization focused on women's innovative and entrepreneurial achievements in technology hosted young women--- ranging in age from early 20’s to late 30’s--- to present a unique female perspective on finances before, during, and after marriage.
Both Ms. Mazzei and Ms. Soto drew upon the real life situations of their clients. Ms. Mazzei noted that many of her female clients don't know much about family finances, placing them at a severe disadvantage in a divorce proceeding. "Many of my female clients tell me that they wish someone had told them to be more aware of their finances and what the consequences could be if they weren't," said Ms. Mazzei. Attendees seemed particularly interested in learning about ways they can effectively communicate with their partners about their family’s financial state.
The presentation also put to rest some common myths about family law and divorce. "One of the biggest misperceptions is that prenups are just for celebrities and the wealthy, but that's simply not the case," said Ms. Mazzei. "If you are coming into the marriage with assets you need to be asking yourself whether a premarital agreement is right for you."
Many of the "Girls In Tech" attendees felt the program provided women with much needed information. "I wish there was more information out there like this!" said one attendee.
