This morning I got up at the crack of early to head down to Los Angeles and join 15 other Los Angeles-based BlogHer community members at a taping of The Ricki Lake Show. We're going to be talking about the power of social media: its power to change our individual lives, and its power to help us all change the world.
It's one of my favorite topics, natch.
During the Closing Keynote of BlogHer '12, Lisa and I talked about The BlogHer Economy, and shared how BlogHer community members have been able to thrive during a tough economy. We also shared how proud we were that, as publisher for more than 3,000 blogs, BlogHer paid out $17 million from 2009-2011 to writers in compensation for their writing, reach and influence. Then there are all the members who talk about the non-monetary benefits they have received (and were able to bestow), thanks to their blogs and to the exposure those blogs brought them.
We will be there to share our stories today, and to represent for the strength and support we have found through online community.
The BlogHer community first met Ricki at BlogHer '11 in San Diego, where she was part of a wonderful closing keynote conversation about women making media. Since then, as she and her entire team have ramped up to this week's premiere of her new talk show, she has immersed herself (and her show) in the social media world.
So, it's no surprise she scheduled a conversation about social media itself for her first week of shows. We're taping today, and the show will air Wednesday the 12th. They have encouraged us to spend the entire taping via live tweeting, Facebooking, Plussing, and however else many BlogHers in one place choose to share online. So if you love spoiler alerts, we're your gals.
You can follow along from about 10AM PT, when we start showing up at the studios, to 1PM PT, when it's all over all too quickly, by following along: @BlogHer, @RickiLakeShow and the hashtag #FriendsofRicki.
