A subject that I don't see covered much is blog design. While good consistent writing is important to successful blogging, I think that how your blog looks cannot be underestimated. It is all in the initial presentation. A blog that is well designed and catches the eye does play a significant part in hooking readers. The banner of your blog can draw people in and cause them to want to scroll down to see and read more or move on. Many bloggers understand this and will hire the expertise of a web designer to make their blog pop or unique in some way. The blog Brooklyn Limestone is a great example. I taught myself web design a few years ago, so by the time I decided to create my blog in late 2011, I was able to put some of my own personal spin onto the template. That saved me a lot of money but I may one day decide to contact a professional web designer to help me improve on the look of my blog.
A well designed blog also attracts the media. Print magazines are paying attention to the blogging world and often feature bloggers. Magazines such as Where Women Cook, Where Women Create, Romantic Homes and other home style magazines feature bloggers a lot. Of course magazines such as Artful Blogger features many bloggers in each publication.
The use of photos is also important, especially if your blog is about food, home decor, fashion, beauty or travel. Investing in a good camera and learning how to take good quality pictures is well worth it. If you are looking for images on Google search or anyplace make sure that the pictures are good quality. With the social media Pinterest attracting so many people it is another way to advertise your blog. thousands of photos are pinned onto Pinterest boards directly from blogs.
Lastly, If you want your blog to grow an audience remember also that consistent writing is very important. There are lots of blogs out there that have not been updated in a long time, sometimes years. Serious blogging is a commitment; almost like having a job. I wanted to start a blog for years but I put it off until I thought I could really put in the time and effort on a regular basis. Blogging does take up a lot of my time, but I love it because it feeds my love of writing and it has expanded my world in wonderful ways.
