We all want to create content that will get noticed, passed along and even become viral. For those of us who try to attain this through blogging, our work is cut out for us. The puzzle then becomes: how do you create content that readers will love?
The way I think of it is this: Remember those dense volumes that cluttered your college syllabi as an English major? Some of them you enjoyed, maybe, but some of them seemed so full of antiquated ideas and language that nails on a chalkboard sounded more appealing. If your content falls under these categories, leave the dusty book on the shelf and find content that will grab your readers’ attention and make their reading experience fun and worthwhile.
Ask questions, engage your audience, make it relevant and learn how to make even the dullest subject come to life. Because if readers love it, they’ll be more likely to share it, right?
Know Your Audience
Without knowing your audience, any content you write will be aiming for one person only: yourself. And that’s not the purpose of writing, at least not online. The purpose of writing is to communicate an idea or story to a group of people who will be informed, in a unique way, by what you have to say. Select your topics based on the people you are trying to reach.
For example, if you are trying to communicate how to effectively solicit donations for a non-profit, you would want to understand that you are targeting a very select group of people: those who work for a non-profit and those who solicit donations.
Keep your writing geared to this select group, because they’re the ones who are going to benefit from your new ideas. Nathalie Moreno from ContentRunner has some great tips on content marketing and figuring out the needs of your audience.
Provide Value by Knowing Your Topic
Don’t just regurgitate what you’ve read about your topic. To write content that gets noticed, you have to know just what it is that makes your topic interesting and worthy of consideration. Stick to journalism’s favorite question: Why? Why should your audience read the content? Why is it meaningful to you and to them? What will they learn from it and gain for their own lives?
Answering these questions will ensure that your content provides value, not just regurgitated information. Henneke Duistermaat, from CopyBlogger, writes, “Boring text slaughters people’s appetites for reading. A good blog post is written with passion. When your enthusiasm shines through, you invigorate your readers.”
Use Real-Life Examples
Support your ideas and content with real-life examples. People connect most with ideas that they encounter, themselves, in their everyday life. Find a way to make a connection between what you are writing about and an experience that others may have already stumbled upon.
This will personalize the content for your readers. However, a balance on this one is necessary. You don’t want to overload your reader with everything that ever happened to you. Instead, try to use examples you’ve come across to only support, not overtake, your content.
Use Current Events
Use current events to spark and excite a response. Doing so will make you seem in tune with more than just your own life, but with the lives of countless others. It will give you room to be passionate about your opinion on the subject while promoting others to share your passion and as well as form opinions of their own. If you happen to get some great feedback, remember to reply as soon as you can to make your reader know their thoughts are valued.
By following these few pointers, you will be well on your way to creating content that will invoke a response in your reader and lead your work to the forefront of the writing community.
