When I worked in the city, many lunch hours were spent in a department stores trying on dressy dresses, just for fun. So, it shouldn’t be a shock that I love nothing more than dressing up in a Halloween costume. My husband Marc, on the other hand, not so much….
Several weeks before Halloween, our friends invited us to join them for dinner at their country club on Halloween weekend. The one requirement was that we had to come in a costume. Needless to say, I was thrilled at the opportunity to dress up. Marc didn’t share my enthusiasm. His first reaction was to pass on the party. He totally didn’t want any part in dressing up.
I told our friends to not count us out. I planned on “working” on Marc to change his mind. I wracked my brain with creative costumes for us to wear. Regardless of what I suggested, Marc found something wrong with them. He truly just didn’t want to wear a costume.
As the weeks passed, I continued to pester him. Our friends pestered him. Disappointed and defeated, I finally gave up. I didn’t want to make Marc dress up in a costume if he didn’t want to. If he was unhappy, it wouldn’t be fun anyway. So, one morning over coffee I told him I gave up. I explained I was done with the Halloween idea, and that I wasn’t going to bother him about a wearing a costume again.
An hour or so later, I got out of the shower and walked into the closet to get ready for work. I found Marc in the chef hat and jacket I gave him a million years ago when we were first dating. “Look, I found a costume” he happily announced! “I will go as a chef! I don’t mind wearing this because it is really comfy…. I can wear it with flannel pants and a tee shirt.”
And, that was that….. I love this man!
This was last Halloween…. I am wearing this costume to work today……
