Goodbye #Hashtags, Goodbye @Replies, Hello Unhelpful New Twitter?

Twitter let on today that it might do away with hashtags and @replies on the site, and no, this isn't an early April Fools joke.

Vivian Schiller (@vivian) threw out that idea in a speech, and the thought immediately spread through social media like a wild fire, with Schiller quickly backtracking and trying to contain her words.

But it begs the question: how helpful is the site at all if #hashtags and @replies were eliminated? Would the collective Internet still use Twitter without these elements of the social media site?

Would you keep using Twitter if they eliminated #hashtags and @replies?  Or would Twitter become like a sand sculpture, washed away by the great Internet sea but fun while it lasted?
