My days of continuous rejection & moping are over…I GOT A JOB!!! It all happened so quickly. I had been monitoring the job listings for several hospital systems in the area & applying for anything & everything. A couple of promising looking positions opened in the hospital system that I favored. So I decided it was time to start working my connections.
I called one of my previous clinical instructors who has ties with the hospital system to see if there was anything I could do that would get my application in front of an actual person. He asked what floors I had applied to, I rattled off some numbers & he replied with, “I’ll take care of it.” That was on a Monday.
On Tuesday I got a call from one of the nurse managers asking when I could come in for an interview. On Wednesday I was in her office for about 45 minutes where she informed me that she’d let me know either way. On Thursday I sent her a “thanks for taking the time to interview me” email. On Friday when I saw her number pop up on my phone I thought I was getting the “thanks but no thanks” call. It had only been 48 hours…there was no way I got the job.
I distinctly remember the first part of our conversation:
- Nurse Manager: I was calling to see if you were still interested in the position?
- Me: Um, yeah. I mean yes. Of course.
- Nurse Manager: Good because I think you’d be a great fit & a nice addition to the team.
- Me: Wait, what?
- Nurse Manager: I’d like to offer you the position.
- Me: I’ll take it! I mean thank you!
I’m pretty sure she laughed before she started telling me about what the next steps were, but I can’t be certain.
My mind was spinning...I had gone from continuously rejected to openly accepted in a week! After calling my parents & my grandma with the good news, I called my instructor to thank him for getting me the job. I'll never forget what he said, "All I did was make a phone call. You got that job yourself."
