SOOOOO what’s up with this? Don’t sit up there and act like you haven’t noticed it too! I need answers…LIKE NOW!
How come EVERY TIME I walk through the décor section of our most frequented shopping centers – Wally World, Target, TJ Maxx, Ross, Claire’s, Marshall’s, The Icing, and Burlington Coat Factory – all I see are canvases, portraits, quotes and other nostalgia of ONLY Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe??? :(
Audrey, righteous in her own right, is a beautiful icon whose elegance, poise, and philanthropic essence have captured our hearts – near and far. Her delicacy and charm have taught us everything from cherishing all things Tiffany to remaining resilient despite the grim difficulties that can oftentimes crux our spirits.
But what about our beloved Lena Horne? What about the civic contributions she made to our Civil Rights Movement? Did we forget about Diahann Carroll’s alluring looks, humanitarian efforts, and not to mention, legendary talents that afforded her the opportunity to be donned as an Emmy nominated actress because of her success on being the first African American actress to star in her OWN television series, ‘Julia’? Was the iconic and ever-so breathtaking beauty, Dorothy Dandridge, correct when she said, “If I were white, I could capture the world?”
Yes, it’s 2014. Yes, we have a dashing lad President of African descent, but Dorothy’s words still seem to ring true despite it all…
To all of my Asian, Hispanic, and Native American sisters, I don’t seem to recall seeing your classical beauties on the shelves either…It’s rather upsetting… :(
And what’s up with our girls, young ladies, and women idolizing Marilyn Monroe? Since adulterous acts with our nation’s President gets us notoriety, should I expect to see Monica Lewinsky canvases and quotes donning the shelves for my daughter to purchase in the next decade or so?
Now, I’m in NO way attempting to pass judgment. Marilyn nor Monica are bad women and their character is certainly not defined by their imprudent acts. I’m just saying that there are plenty of other women we can celebrate and have stamped and plastered in our stores and homes that happen to be even more noteworthy not only because of their glamour but also their diversity, benevolence, and altruistic filled hearts.
A few of these ladies I’m referring to are pictured below. Oh yeah, be sure to leave your favorites below and check out www.canvaspop.com to get your fave pics transformed into beautiful printed canvases so you too can decorate your space with vintage that looks more like YOU! :D
