#eMSF Conference Re-cap: Day 1

Day 1 of eMarketing Association’s “The Power of eMarketing” conference in San Francisco is in the books! There was a great turn out yesterday and we learned a lot of new things. We also met some awesome people and made new Twitter friends. Tina Stewart, SVP of Marketing at LYRIS kicked things off with a very informative keynote presentation. She said Washington, D.C. has the highest concentration of Twitter usage and that spending in the social media sector has grown by 53%. How amazing is that?

Highlights / Facts from the Keynote Presentation

  • URLs showed up in advertisements 10 years ago.
  • 107 trillion people use email (the numbers are growing with mobile).
  • Multi-channel integration tells the story. Think of ways people are engaging. Create an experience!
  • Have a conversation with your audience.
  • The question to ask is, “Who isn’t on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn?”

Chris Baggott, CEO and Co-Founder of Compendium Blogware, gave an awesome presentation entitled “Blogging and Social Media Synergy.” In it he stressed a constant flow of fresh content on your blog. Why? Because according to HubSpot, blogs drive the most traffic to websites – up to 4 times more! Additionally, “content curation” and “multi-tasking marketing” became Baggot’s buzz words of the hour. Think about that when you create your next social media strategy!

Highlights / Facts from “Blogging and Social Media Synergy”

  • Check your site headline, key phrases, and pepper them into your content.
  • Drive traffic to your site with images on your pages and blog.
  • Write content that is re-marketable. Don’t re-invent the wheel. Use what you have and modify it to make it relevant.
  • Having Tumblr over a blog presence is not recommended.

After Baggott’s presentation we had the pleasure of attending Communic8 CEO Lloyd A. Sliverman’s discussion, “Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn – Making it Social.” He shared some funny statistics (did you know ⅓ of women check Facebook in the bathroom) and gave helpful tips on how to drive traffic through planned strategies.

Highlights / Facts from “Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn – Making it Social”

  • Fans are more valuable when they impact their friends.
  • People that give things away have more friends.
  • 1.5 million people have businesses with active Facebook profiles.

The afternoon session got off to a delightful start. We attended Angie Pascal’s presentation on social media reputation management and left with a wealth of information. Pascal is the Communications and Social Media Manager at Location3 Media.

Highlights / Facts from “Managing Social Media – Reputation Management”

  • Be transparent and honest when dealing with negative press.
  • Use social profiles to outrank negative content. Make sure you brand everything.
  • Forums are difficult to control. But if users swear or spam, do not hesitate to delete their comments.

Following Pascal’s presentation we took a break from social and listened to Kevin Lee, CEO and Co-Founder of Didit, speak about search marketing and keyword strategy.

Highlights / Facts from “Advanced Keyword Strategy and Modeling”

  • Develop a strong keyword strategy before you do any search engine marketing.
  • Create words that are in the form of a question when doing keyword searches.
  • On the Google keyword research panel, click on the columns icon to add parameters like cpc, competition. You’ll find out some interesting info.
