As a recent college graduate, my job search is especially tough. Companies that do not have a hiring freeze are hiring the more experienced workers laid off from other companies. This leaves me and my freshly printed bachelor's degree with seemingly limited careeroptions. I have decided that this is going to work out well for me.
Two weeks ago, my corporate internship ended. It was a good place to work, I loved the team I was with, but I found myself looking forward to the weekend a little too much. Plus the long commute downtown meant I had two hours from the time I got home to the time I needed to go to bed. Not quite enough for me. Luckily, they weren't hiring entry-level people at the moment.
During my two weeks of freedom from earning money to pay my student loans, I have been weighing my options. I spent all spring and summer looking for a job, and have been called in for interviewsonly twice. People have told me horror stories about the competition out there.(Example: A job as a petri dishwasher opened up at a local biology/sciencecompany. More than 100 people applied for the job, at least three of whom had PhDs in biology.) With stiff competition in existing companies and hiring freezes everywhere, my best bet is looking to be going in to business for myself.
There are some disadvantages to this, such as limited wages, no benefits, and the uncertainty of the market. The beauty of it is, at most jobs that I could be hired for right now, those disadvantages would still exist. The advantages, however, are tantalizing. Choose my own hours, no bosses, ability to take on an extra job if needed and, let’s not forget, do something that I love. Tough choice.
My generation was raised to believe that we can be whatever we want to be. The downturn in the economy is helpful to us. We are presented with the opportunity to pursue our dreams without having to look at our peers striking it rich doing something they do not love. The grass is brown on both sides of the fence. We may as well enjoy making little money.
