One of the things that makes BlogHer's community keynote so powerful is that the words pop off the screen as you hear them in the blogger's own voice. That was the idea behind Ann Imig's brain-child Listen to Your Mother, a mix of live and videotaped performances featuring the writing of motherhood bloggers.
A little over a year ago, Listen to Your Mother (LTYM) had its first performance in Madison, Wisconsin, showcasing the writing of 12 bloggers. Since then, there have been many performances and videos made of women testifying about their experience with motherhood.
In April and May of this year, there were 5 local performances of motherhood bloggers in Austin, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Madison, WI; Valparaiso, IN; and Spokane, WA. 44 bloggers participated and have this to say about the experience:
- Parenthood can be an isolating place and blogging has brought me the gift of reading the words of others and saying, "Yes," and "I know," and "Exactly." Listen To Your Mother is an extension of that online community, bringing the words to life. --Lisa Page Rosenberg.
- Scoring a spot in LTYM is a great way to share and empathize with parents at large, particularly the Mamas at how hard but rewarding our jobs are. Plus it is less rehearsal than a play would be... it fits into my Mama Life nicely! --Heather.
- Blogging first taught me the power of sharing my stories and then it taught me the joy of getting to know other women through their stories. --Stacey.
It's not too late to get involved. As Ann writes on the LTYM site: If YOU have interest in directing or producing LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER for your local community in 2012, please email Ann Imig, National Director email@example.com. The list is already growing!
