Anniversary Celebration Goes Low-Key

We celebrated our fifth anniversary aboard a Norwegian cruise.

One year ago, my husband and I were in Puerto Rico, celebrating our wedding anniversary on board the Norwegian Sun. This year, we don't even want to go out to dinner.

Our lives are exhausting, as I'm sure everyone's are. We have a five-year-old, a three-year-old and two dogs. We both juggle full-time jobs, but his is a six-day a week schedule--with only Sundays off. He also has class three evenings a week. I take over most of the parenting and household duties.

I have no idea how we even had time for a cruise last year. And why would we pick a cruise?

This summer, my mother-in-law took our daughters up north for a trip to her friend's cabin. My husband had just returned from China and was trying to turn his sleep schedule around. So we did nothing. It was amazing.

Is it sad to say it was probably as equally amazing as that expensive, Caribbean cruise?

So when weighing our options for our Nov. 11 anniversary this year, we realized that the plan doesn't have to be elaborate. We don't have to be on a boat on the ocean. We don't have to sky dive. We don't even have to have dinner out and a movie. We can simply order a Jets Pizza and watch Swamp People.

This time last year, you couldn't have convinced me that I'd consider a few hours in my own home as relaxing as a day poolside while our ship traveled between islands.

Our potential babysitters are looking to us for some sort of plan, but what they don't understand is that we really don't want one. We just want some time, together, to relax and talk and watch crap TV while watching terrible TV. Although, we did that on our cruise too.

So what do you do to celebrate your big events? Do you go all out or just hole up and cuddle?
