North Carolina passed Amendment One yesterday, successfully banning same-sex marriage. Reading articles in reference to it today, I find myself more and more disturbed.
I believe people should be able to marry whomever they want. If you love someone, the law shouldn't have the power to stop you from enjoying the same rights as other married couples. In my humble opinion, laws are written by people sitting far away from the action, considering hypothetical situations and not accounting for anomalies. They are imposing rules for the masses without regard to how it will effect individuals.
Laws are a good thing. Don't get me wrong. We need them to help prevent people from committing crimes, to deter those who are not deterred morally with consequences here on earth. I understand the need and I don't believe all laws are bad. People need rules and structure as a whole, just as a child needs rules and structure individually.
This law reeks of bad, though. Of inhumanity. Of the violation of human rights. Of moral high ground.
Living in the South, I am accustomed to bigotry. People here cannot tolerate the idea of a man and a man together. The same people will tell you that two women together is okay. Their whole argument revolves around their own sexual preferences and not what the concept of marriage really is. Marriage is more than sex. Marriage is having your best friend by your side for the rest of your life. It's about making the big decisions together. The fun ones and the hard ones. It's about being on the same page with someone when you raise your family. It's about reaching the end of your life with that person beside you. It's about having someone who knows your wishes there to speak for you when you no longer can.
The Bible Belt wants to ban the union of two souls because they believe God didn't intend for it to be anyway other than man and woman. People say that the Bible says this and the Bible says that. But the Bible was translated and copied so many many years ago, the truth of God's will can fall flat sometimes. We don't know what God wants. And here's the other thing. The world is over populated with ignorant bigots as it is and same sex couples are doing the world a favor by limiting their procreation. If people of the same sex decide to be together, they will have to go to a bit of trouble to create a child of their own or they will have to adopt or they will have to decide to have no children. But if they have children, you can bet those kids will be raised by two caring and compassionate people. They'll be raised to be kind. And that's saying a lot.
You don't see a lot of domestic violence in the gay and lesbian community, either. These people love each other and respect one another.
Raising my daughter in world that lacks tolerance pains me more than words can say. I want her to know love. When she decides to marry someone, I don't care what sex they are so long as they treat her with respect and kindness. Civil rights should extend to everyone, not just those the lawmakers think they should.
