Who better to listen to for advice than from the people who have already managed to get one of those elusive top jobs?

1.“Always be smarter than the people who hire you.” Lena Horne

Lena Horne was an inspiration to Hollywood as she combined her passion and talent for jazz music with a life-long civil rights activism campaign. But her words of wisdom don’t just apply to Hollywood actors and jazz musicians. They can be a source of inspiration to you too in your hunt for the top jobs in your chosen field. It’s a reminder that you should always be one step ahead in your job applications. For example, before an interview, try writing down all of the questions you would ask yourself if you were the interviewer. Then make sure that you have an answer to each one of your questions.

2.“Poets are never unemployed, just unpaid.”  Kathy Skaggs

Although we aren’t all poets, this quote is extremely relevant as we could all find ourselves without work at some point in our lives. Just because you are not being paid to work, doesn’t mean that you can’t keep your skills up-to-date. If you find yourself without a job for an extended period of time, make sure that you have something to fill the gaps on your CV. Try signing up for an online course to learn a new skill or volunteering at a local charity to keep your mind fresh and your skills active. When applying for the top jobs, you will be up against stiff competition, so make sure that you don’t give potential employers any reason to choose someone else over you.

3.“In a job you trade your freedom and time for money.”  Ken Poirot

Whilst this statement of Poirot’s is sadly true for any job, some occupations will ask you to give up more of your time than others. It is often the top vacancies which will ask you to make the most personal sacrifices. Before you start any job search, make sure that you know what you are willing to give up in return for your salary. If you are moving jobs because you want more time to spend with your family or friends, make sure that the new job will definitely allow for this before you accept the offer.

4.“If you want people to do a good job, give them a good job to do.”  Frederick Herzberg

It’s no trade secret that people who are stimulated by their jobs and their working environment are much more likely to succeed and to perform well in their careers. When you are on the hunt for top jobs, look at the job in the long run. Can you see yourself being stimulated and motivated by the job a few months or years down the line? Does the prospect of the job excite you? If the answer to these questions is no, then perhaps you should be looking for top jobs elsewhere.

5.“Do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again.” -  Richard Branson

Every time you are unsuccessful in a job application, take it as an opportunity to learn something new for the next one. You’ll find as you go along that people don’t get into the top jobs by getting everything right first time, instead they achieve the most success from learning the most from their mistakes. The strongest applicants won’t deny that they have made mistakes, but they will be able to say exactly how the last mistake they made has helped them to grow.

6.“When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favour.” - Elon Musk

Don’t be afraid to dream and aim high! Sometimes it is worth taking the chance and applying for the job even if you don’t have all of the skills and qualifications that they are asking for. Companies will quite often post a job application describing their ideal candidate. In many cases, they will relax some of these so-called ‘required’ qualifications if they find somebody who is enthusiastic to learn and is a good fit for the company. If they think they have potential, they may well take a chance on you, but you will never know if you don’t apply!

So there you are: 6 quotes from people who have succeeded in finding their own top jobs and who might just be able to help you to find yours!
