The first time I saw these words posted on an office cupboard I was confused. Of course my mother didn't work here I thought to myself after reading it. My mom was plugging away at an company miles from this office. In fact she had been working hard at that particularly company for years so she could keep a roof over our heads and brand named microwave dinners on the table.
It took me a second to realize that the sign presumed that whoever was reading it had a mother to constantly clean up after them. Well the truth for my own mother was that she was just a little too tired after a long day to clean up after her perfectly capable children. As a result I learned very early on to put my things away. It was the least I could do.
My mother is the consummate professional. As such I became, in my own rebelliously artistic and freedom loving way (thanks Dad), rather pro myself. This set me apart time and time again from my peers in a wide range of situations: from showing up in work clothes to volunteer, to arriving right on time for a photo shoot, to answering phone calls in a clear friendly voice, to keeping my coworkers from my own personal dramas. Mom raised a helluva career woman and taught me a LOT about doing good work: Check out the rest of post!
