Spring Gardening

Spring is officially here....today we enjoyed 88 degrees during a beautiful sunny day...yeah!

I wish I could have stayed home and got some gardening done.

I love gardening in my spare time and on weekends.  I enjoy planting vegetables, herbs and flowers.  I also have started a strawberry patch, planted several raspberry bushes and a couple of blueberry bushes.

I am still in the learning stages with the raspberries, since this is my first spring when I needed to trim them to about 3 ft high, and discarded the old branches, as fruits only produce for two years on the same branch.

I am a frugal gardener, making my own compost out of fruit and vegetable scraps, and egg shells.  I do not use any chemicals to suplement the nutrients in the soil.  Currently my garden has "mushroom soil" which is very rich and the plants love it. Eventually I will need to add more mushroom soil, or cow manure.

Last year I planted a new vegetable in my garden, named Sorrel, and it is doing very well this spring.  It is already tall enough to harvest to make some salad, or Sorrel Borscht.

This year I plan to save some space in my garden, and plant my Squash and Zucchini in pots, next to my garden.  I never tried this before, so I hope it will work.  I would like to hear from other gardeners who tried that method before, and how it worked out for them.

I also seeded some green and red peppers indoors, to get started with seadlings for my garden, rather than from seeds, so they have a good start and take less time to mature.  I am very excited about these, as I never tried planting peppers before.

I am looking forward to some sunny, warm weekends so I can start planting.
