Lampshades are suitable complements to the home décor. They can be made to match the ambience, the style preferred by the home owner, to brighten up the room, to add a bespoke element to the environment. Making a lampshade at home is easy, and the results are truly inspiring and rewarding – the new element makes the home livelier and more appealing.
According to lampshade designers, there are three major types of lampshades: tailored ones, pleated lampshades, and the simplest type – the hard frame type. People can choose the type of lampshade they would prefer to make, but usually it is best to start with the simplest type which is the easiest to achieve, that is, the hard frame lampshade.
For the purpose, a list should be drawn up of the necessary materials and tools, before the making of the lampshade begins. The main elements of the hard frame lampshade are the wire frame rings, the top and the bottom ones; the backing material, usually PVC; the fabric on the outside, which can be of any type, velvet, rayon, satin, or any other fabric available at home which is suitable for a lampshade. Care should be taken not to choose open weave fabrics, as they tend to accumulate dust and dirt and make cleaning difficult. People who have decided to make their own lampshade should also stock double sided sticky tape, as well as any braiding or similar decorations if they wish to add them for more appealing appearance.
When choosing the fabric colour, people should bear in mind that red or yellow fabrics will be the best for adding a glowing warmth. Green or blue fabrics tend to emit cold light. The backing material is easy to find, obtainable online or in brick and mortar shops. It is enough to launch a search for lampshade material. There are a lot of offers of semi transparent material of different thicknesses which is rigid enough and is self adhesive. The fabric itself should not be creased. If there are any creases, the fabric should be ironed before the making of the lampshade starts.
The wire frame has two rings, as mentioned before. The rings circumferences should be measured before the material to be added is cut. When calculating the height and the width of the lampshade, some extra centimetres should be added because the fabric will be wrapped around the frame.
The attachment of the fabric to the rings should be made using the special double sided sticky tape. Such tape is also available both in conventional shops and in online ones. When attaching the fabric to the rings, people can use pegs to hold it until the whole exterior is secured.
People who insist on more decorative elements can add some braiding to their lampshades, or they can use bias binding, according to their preferences. There are also a lot of other options for small decorations which can further add to the outstanding look of the lampshade, such as beads, sequins, etc.
