Yogi Cameron Alborzian is noted for his expertise in Ayurveda, weight loss and yoga. He is the author of "The One Plan: A Week-by-Week Guide to Restoring Your Natural Health and Happiness" and "The Guru in You: A Personalized Program for Rejuvenating Your Body and Soul."
He's worked with many celebrities, and TV star Maria Menounos credits him for turning her onto yoga in her book "The EveryGirl's Guide to Diet and Fitness: How I Lost 40 lbs and Kept It Off-And How You Can Too."
I interviewed him about his insights on weight loss.
1. How do mind and body influence weight loss?
"The mind is the primary influence on every aspect of our lifestyle and habits which then have an effect on the body. The body functions in a healthy or unhealthy way mostly because of how our mind works and what the mind is attracted to. For this reason we have to first treat the mind which is the root cause and find the reason of weight gain then we can treat the body which affected by the symptoms. This way we are treating both cause and effect of weight gain to help the individual get back to their ideal weight."
2. What is the link between sleep and weight gain?
"Weight gain at its root is an imbalance of the mind which affects the body so if a person has any of their natural routines of eating, sleeping or breathing disturbed then for sure their body will be affected and show signs of the inner imbalance on the outside. We sleep at night because it is a time of rest for us and mother nature on our side of the world. When we disturbed this very important necessity which builds and rejuvenates our entire being, then we bring on many ailments such as disturbed digestion leading to weight gain."
3. When it comes to supplements for weight loss, health and sleep? What do you recommend?
"The ayurvedic lifestyle always favors a natural approach which means the use of food as medicine so the body can stay healthy and at the correct individual weight according to a person's necessities. And living a natural life also means developing habits which are in accordance and in harmony with Mother Nature. Intake of food needs to be adjusted daily according to our need for nutrition and energy but not more or less. We should sleep enough to rest the body and mind according to how much is necessary but not more or less. If we follow these rules then our body should remain at the correct individual weight."
4. For people who have never practiced yoga, what do you suggest for starting?
"First a person needs to know why they want to get into Yoga. Is it the physical, mental or spiritual aspect of yoga and the yogic life are they interested in. Once this is been established them they need to find a practitioner or teacher in their area who can help them on their chosen path. The teacher should also be able to guide them to the correct path if one has not been ascertained by the student. Intention is the beginning of every journey so we must first know why we want to do something whether it is yoga or reading a book."
