Taxi drivers' brains change as they learn to navigate London

Still not convinced of the brain's plasticity? (It's ability to change and adapt at any age)

Check out this story about London taxi drivers learning to navigate and locate 25,000 streets and 20,000 landmarks:

Of all the taxi drivers that attempt this feat (of learning the 25,000 streets and 20,000 landmarks), only about half pass the exam – and it takes 3-4 years to learn it.

When researchers did brain scans on the taxi drivers who passed, they had increased grey matter at the back of the hippocampus (compared to when they started the study 3-4 years before that).

The brain researchers believe that training that stimulates the brain can form new neurons and/or strengthen the connections between existing neurons.
