- the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.
What are the first words that come to mind when you think of the term "self-care"? If you immediately imagine spa days, bubble baths and a glass (or bottle - this is a judgement free zone) of wine, you are not alone. Not that those things are not all forms of self-care... and sometimes completely necessary. But in an age of new buzzwords and trendy activities, self-care can seem like just another cool thing to post on social media. That can be exhausting. When in its most impactful form, the balance of health and wellness should be something approached mindfully and with intention.
It is no coincidence that the synonyms for "care" are: safekeeping, supervision, custody, charge, protection, control, responsibility. When you consider your own self-care do you feel charged with the protection and safekeeping of your mind, body and spirit? If not, then it is time to revamp how you look at the practice.
First, honor the magnitude of responsibility that has been placed in your hands. You are, whether you believe it or not, invaluable. Which means that as your own protector, you are in charge of providing the things that are necessary for your holistic health, welfare, maintenance and protection. Take ownership of the responsibility of YOU...in your entirety. Mind. Body. Spirit. You are in control. 😊
Once you do that, it is time to live it. Prioritize your physical and emotional health. Make conscious decisions to maintain your wellness. Approach every experience as an opportunity to practice self-care.
