Happy New Year everyone! It's hard to believe that yet another year is over and now a new one is upon us, but here we are...
I know people who had a wonderful 2011 and people who are unbelievably excited to be putting it behind us. However, no matter which camp you find yourself in, if you take a little time to think about the year - both the good and the bad - you will find that you learned something. Maybe it's something about yourself, a loved one, a friend or coworker...now is your chance to take that knowledge, be thankful for it, and use it to help you become a happier, healthier person in the next year. Maybe you tried a new workout and really enjoyed it - then go ahead and do it! Don't feel guilted into running 5 days a week because your spouse does...if you enjoy running just a couple days and really look forward to your M-W-F yoga classes, then that's what you should be doing for you! Maybe you have some people in your life that you know are negative, they don't support or encourage you - in fact may even actively try to sabotage your efforts to be successful. Take a moment, some deep breaths, and think about whether or not it's time to start distancing yourself from them. Better to have one truly great friend who will love and support you no matter what than to have 5 friends (just because you think more is better - or because you've just always been friends) who are always competitive and quietly discouraging. What you will find is that by being picky you will actually grow a larger, more supportive and more encouraging network than before...and it's an amazing feeling.
Success is within us all, we just need to define what it means to us and choose to embrace it. For me, this year, being successful is going to be just putting myself out - trying something new that's bold and out of my comfort zone, and seeing what happens. I may not be an elite, national level runner - but there is no reason that I can't think, train, and race like I am one. Being brave enough to line up at a National Championship race will be my success story. What will your's be?
I have a lot of goals for this year and right now feel my head just busting with things write! I have committed to try a crazy January challenge to blog everyday - so it appears there will be plenty of opportunity for me to share...so please stay tuned in!
Yesterday I was blessed with the opportunity to run with Brian for the last run of 2011. This afternoon I went out for my first run of 2012 - 8 miles of rough trails. About 2.5 miles into my run the first of what would be 3 storms rolled in and it was glorious. In the wind and splashing mud I felt like I was flying through the woods and the rain was washing away the last year and preparing me for the next year, and I am excited.
So I repeat - Happy New Year to you all. It really all starts tomorrow, Monday, when everything is fresh and new. What will you make your year be?
Come run along with me, it's gonna be good!
