Run for the Cure

Every year the CIBC Run for the Cure takes place across Canada. It is a 5k or 1k run or walk that raises not only funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, but also awareness for the need for continued research.

Many go to this event in memory of someone lost to breast cancer. Some take part to celebrate a survivor. I am not running for either of these very worthwhile reasons, although friends and acquaintances have been touched by breast cancer. I am running because cancer is still prevalent and it is frightening.

I lost one grandmother to lung and liver cancer and my other grandmother battled and survived yet another form of the disease. My husband and mother in law are both survivors of still other forms of cancer.

When I’m asked, ‘Who are you running for?’ – those family members who fought, and won or lost are my answer. But also my children, brothers, cousins, neighbours, your father, your wife…everyone.

The more present the issue remains in our collective thoughts the sooner researchers will discover a means of combatting and curing cancer. I know that the ‘c’ word is a very broad term, but getting one step closer to understanding the intricacies of one form of the disease will encourage researchers across the board and across borders.

I’m asking you to be aware, of cancer and of breast health. And also to participate if you can. Run with us, donate if you’re able, but most importantly educate yourself. Although the symbol is a pink ribbon, men are included in the cause. And really pink looks good on anyone.

Breast cancer affects everyone, from those diagnosed to their entire circle of family and friends.

On September 30, 2012 I’m running for boobs everywhere with Team YMC.
