Simple, Practical Techniques with a 'Spiritual Twist'
The sound and practical advice offered in this book can benefit the 'average' person facing stress, anxiety and worrisome thoughts. The approaches described combine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is then broken down into more simplistic and easy to understand and follow techniques of imagery, visualization, positive self-talk, usage of a journal to document positive words or phrases, relaxation techniques of listening to music and the benefits to exercise. As the title states, there is a focus on spirituality or seeking religious guidance of a priest or minister and using the Bible and spiritual verses to reduce stress and anxiety. Should one not be interested in this, they could skip over the section. The case scenarios used within are helpful. Good, basic and well-explained techniques for overcoming fear
This book did an excellent job of explaining some basic techniques to manage fear. I think it contained a lot of good information for a short book. Everything was explained in a way most people could easily understand. I liked that the author encouraged the reader who needed more help putting the techniques into practice to seek out therapy. I think the book offered exactly what it promised in the title. The book is not meant for every situation or every fear, just some good basic tips that will really work if you put them into practice. As a clinical social worker, I facilitate support groups and fear of something comes up on a weekly basis. This is a good resource book that someone could keep in their purse or pocket so they could easily get to it as needed. It is written so that the average person can understand it. It stays away all the clinical jargon. I will be recommending this book to some of my clients. The things in this book are some of the same things I tell my clients. Having a book on hand would be a fast way to re- enforce what has been discussed; instead of having to try and recall tips when in a state of fear. The book gives helpful examples of how the guidelines can be applied to a given situation. The book isn't to lengthy for those people who either do not like to read or have a short attention span. Managing Fear for Dummies
This book might be called "Managing Fear for Dummies" - and I say that in a positive way with a smile. Mr. Popovich has indeed done his research, both in the areas of fears and solutions. I took my clinician's hat off and slipped into a "layman's" personae, putting aside my learning and experience. What I discovered were suggestions that made sense, and specific and practical activities that were "do-able". This book includes techniques that I have used with clients successfully. Mr. Popovich's writing has a conversation-like tone and is an easy read. For the extremely reasonable cost of the book, it's worth reading and cheaper than going to a seminar presenting, most likely, the same ideas. I found Stanley's e-book to be very useful. It gives some really good ideas about dealing with fear that I had not considered myself. He offers the reader many detailed steps on how to deal with different types of fear. This is a great book for individuals who are trying to work through issues on their own or would like to use with their counselor. I especially liked that he included a spiritual aspect to this book that gives the reader an opportunity to draw closer to God as they work through their current fears. Timely and Sound
Fear is a timely subject in today's anxiety-riddled world, and Stanley Popovich does an excellent job in delving into what fear is and its various forms. He then explains in detail three effective and powerful approaches in managing fear: general counseling techniques, reliance upon God, and non-resistant methods, which means accepting one's fear but not dwelling upon it; rather, through visualization and gradual exposure to the source of one's fear, an individual can eventually overcome it. But Mr. Popovich goes one step further--he shows how to employ these three approaches together. In addition, he provides a list of reputable organizations that give more in-depth information pertaining to fear and its management. A great start on how to handle fear and anxiety
First I would like to mention this was a very simple and easy to read book to read. It helps when readers need to hear methods the simple way without psychological terms. Popovich introduces his book by explain what fear is and gives three methods on how to deal with ones fears. I like the fact that he brings in examples in each method which gives the reader an idea on how to implement the methods mentioned. Another great point for me was that he brings in spirituality as one of the methods. Whether it is Christianity or any other religion with the help f God nothing happens.
