This is one of those questions that is not easily answered, is it? Yes, we have choices and make them throughout our busy days, but its not always easy. If you are fortunate to work from home or in a small-like minded work/life balance type of workplace, it can be easier; but, if you work for a larger company or corporation, who knows what mix of tempting foods you'll get throughout the day. Your boss or co-worker can bring donuts in because its Friday, or because the company just won an award or just because -- we can't control that. But, we can do everything in our power to control our behaviors.
The statistics of our current healthcare costs is most motivating to me in doing everything I can to eat healthy everyday. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, there is an estimated id="mce_marker"90 billion per year spent on healthcare as a result of obesity or 20.6 % of total healthcare costs! Being severely obese can increase costs by as much as 50 percent!
If we are not enthusiastically passionate about our health and nutrition, then why not? As the great Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates so eloquently stated, "Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food." It blows my mind how ahead of the curve he was -- and he was around long, long ago, (460 BC – 370 BC).
Why should you care? When you consider the number of overweight people in the U.S. alone, which is already a staggering number, it's hard to imagine not being motivated to stay healthy. "By 2030, roughly 42 percent of Americans will be obese, researchers announced today to kick off the "Weight of the Nation" obesity conference in Washington, D.C. That staggering rise will contribute to a rise in major health care costs, so much so that the researchers behind the study say keeping obesity rates level over the next 20 years could save nearly $550 billion."
According to the 478- page report taken from "Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation," the only way to fight this epidemic is to dramatically overhaul society. That includes action by community members, schools, the food industry, marketers and the government. Start by:
- Integrating physical activity every day in every way
- Market what matters for a healthy life
- Make healthy foods and beverages available everywhere
- Activate employers and health care professionals
- Strengthen schools as the main focus of health
