“Life happens through you. Not to you.” I’m a firm believer of creating the life you want as opposed to waiting for it to happen. But it wasn’t until last year that I realized that I was going about it all wrong. I had goals, checkpoints and programs — but I was still having problems finding balance.
I AM happy, healthy, valued and loved.
This goal seems almost like a given. Don’t we all strive for that in some way or another? At first, I was even embarrassed to share with my loved ones that was my goal. Still, it wasn’t until I began verbalizing and internalizing the affirmation that my life began to change. Working through Chalene Johnson’s 30DayPUSH program helped me to identify a “PUSH” goal — a goal through which all of your other goals fall under — and this one became mine. From that point forward, it became the starting point from which all of my other goals flowed.
It seems simple, but now I make all of my decisions based on the simplicity of that declaration.
*Does this choice make me happy?
*Is my present experience contributing to a healthy lifestyle?
*Am I valued in this moment? Do I feel loved?
Focusing on “feeling” words allows me to then create meaningful accompanying actions. With my personal happiness being at the forefront (and yes…it’s ABSOLUTELY ok to make your happiness a priority), I am able to create specific action items and daily tasks that allow me to maintain my best health, make intrinsically valuable contributions to my workplace and surround myself with people and experiences that make me feel loved.
I admit that moving from the affirmation to application was initially difficult because I didn’t feel particularly UNhappy. I laugh a lot on a daily basis and I have an amazing support system of family and friends. It took me a minute to realize that I was neglecting my physical/emotional health and not feeling value in my career path. By re-affirming my overall goal daily, I changed how I approached those areas in my life. I established a great relationship with a new healthcare provider. I found her by focusing on how I wanted to feel with my doctor (happy, healthy, valued and loved). My wellness visits are more than a routine and perfunctory chore now. It feels more like a wellness partnership. Together, we created a wellness plan that has me entering my 40’s with the energy of my 20’s.
I feel appreciated in my workplace and even launched a women’s self-care community that gives me renewed purpose and fulfillment. I have created a space for myself in my professional endeavors that gives me emotional fulfillment (happy, healthy, valued and loved). Finally, I am mastering the balance beam of a holistically healthy lifestyle.
