Before you go home from the hospital after a loss like ours, about seven people will tell you the same thing over and over: there are going to be good days, and there are going to be bad days. Be prepared for that. You hear it from the doctor. The nursing staff. The grief counselor. The person responsible for sending your information to the records department.
When they told us that, I didn’t really understand what they meant. I mean, we were so entangled at that point that I couldn’t focus on how I would be feeling a few days or weeks or months down the road. I can’t say that I have complete clarity right now, because it hasn’t really been that long since we lost her.
