Feeling down? Reach for these 7 mood-boosting foods

How we feel (depressed, anxious, sad) is affected by the chemicals in our brain. If you know what to eat, you can balance those chemicals to keep your mood more stable (and positive) in many cases.

Here are some of the best foods to reach for to improve your mood:

1. Lentils. Depressed people often have low folic acid. Lentils are high in folic acid.

2. Brazil nuts. Depressed people sometimes have low levels of selenium. Raw Brazil nuts chave selenium.

3. Avocado. Great source of folic acid and Vimain E.

4. Dark chocolate. The higher the percentage of cacao the better. It reduces stress hormones.

5. Yogurt. New studies are linking probiotics with brain health.

6. Tuna, salmon, flaxseed and walnuts. People with serious depression have been found to have less gray matter in their brains. Omega-3s found in these foods can help increase gray matter.

7. Why protein. Look for whey protein in dairy products that come from grass-fed cows with no added hormones. Whey protein increases serotonin production and may enhance the brain's ability to work under stressful conditions.
