For the past two months or so I've been learning to run. I say "learning" because contrary to what one might think, you don't just wake up one day and decide to be a runner. Or at least that's not how it worked out for me. Since running doesn't come naturally or easy for me (I am NOT related to Forest Gump!) learning to be a runner has turned out to be a bit more of a process than I had anticipated.
Over the course of these past two months here's what I'm learning about running:
- Most of running is a mental battle.
- The hardest part is just getting your shoes on and actually out the door.
- Running sounds much sexier in theory than it actually feels.
- Running is slow, sweaty, painful work for a while.
- And most of the time, you just feel like you're going to die.
- There is this constant mental battle to just stop and sit down a while....or just ditch the pain altogether and go home and watch an episode of Prison Break.
- You have to start small. You don't just go out and run 5 miles. Well at least not if you want to be able to move the next day.
- You have to start slow. Walk/run in intervals one painstaking mile at a time for weeks until you build up enough endurance to actually call what you're doing "running".
- It feels (and probably looks) a bit awkward at first. Some days I swear my legs feel like they weigh a thousand pounds!
- Results don't come immediately. - But they DO come.
As I was running yesterday morning I was listing all of these things in my head thinking about how much I wanted to stop and thinking about how much learning to run was just like doing anything worthwhile in life.
The process to achieving things that are worth while is EVERY THING I just listed above.
The end result is WAY more sexy than the process. It sort of bothers me when people choose to be undisciplined with their bodies and their diet and then just complain or resort to weight loss pills to try and look just like the people who have put in the actual time and work of being healthy. Or worst, resent those who worked to achieve health and fitness the only legitimate way!
In essence those people believe that you can skip the hard work of the process and still have the sexy reward.
Running doesn't work like that.
And neither does life.
You don't just reap the rewards of success in any area of life because you feel like you deserve it. It only comes from commitment, hard work and time.
But in the end, the process that gives birth to the success is always more than worth it.
These are the things running has taught me about life.
