Super Bowl Sparkling Cocktails
In my household, Super Bowl isn't just a day where we gather around the tv and watch men running with a ball across a large grassy field while trying to avoid getting tackled by the opposing team. It's an event.
We usually have anywhere between 20 and 40 of our closest football-loving friends over. Decorations start going up a few days before game day and eventually they cover practically every square inch of blank space.
A few months leading up to the event, boxes start showing up at our door. When I inquire about the contents I am told: "Oh, those… they're re props for Super Bowl." Scratching my head I ask, "What about all the 'other' props you've purchased in years past?" I just get a shrug.
Our house eventually gets transformed into a Mecca for all football fanatics. No need to worry about "getting a good seat," as we relocate every available tv to ensure that no one misses a single play.
Thanks to our generous friends, beer, wine, and spirits are ever-flowing, as are the appetizers. There isn't anything remotely close to shortage when it comes to food and beverage. Everyone usually brings a little something to share.
My husband has been a loyal 49ers fan since I met him over 22 years ago. So this year it's more than our typical annual Super Bowl party. I think he considers it a personal triumph among his friends, as the only 49er fan, his chance to relish the fact that they finally made it this far after such a very long time.
So back to the drink at hand: The Kaepernick Sparkler. My inspiration for this cocktail came about when I learned that sour gummies happen to be 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's favorite candy.
I initially tried to fit them into a dessert, possibly a lemon tart with a sour glaze. But I believe that the best way to make use of these sour gummies is to incorporate them into a drink. Thus, the Kaepernick Sparkler was born.
When making this drink, make sure you get all that magical sour powder into the canning jars, to preserve the sour gummies' taste.
- Sour Gummy Infused Vodka
- 6 ounces vodka
- 1/2 cup sour gummy candy
- Kaepernick Sparkler
- 4 ounces infused sour gummy vodka
- 4 ounces cranberry juice
- 2 ounces pineapple juice
- 6 drops orange bitters
- blood orange soda
- Cranberry Ice Cubes
- cranberry juice
- sour gummy candy
Sour Gummy Infused Vodka
In an airtight glass jar combine vodka and sour gummy candy. Shake every few hours. Store in a cool dark place over night or up to 2-3 days. Strain before using.
Place one or two cranberry ice cubes into glasses.
Pour infused vodka, cranberry juice, pineapple juice and orange bitters into a shaker. Stir well. Pour into prepared glasses. Top with blood orange soda.
Cranberry Ice Cubes
Place 2 sour gummy candies into each hole. Top with cranberry juice and freeze.
If you're a fan of the opposing team, make the Ravens Sparkler using berry-flavored sour gummies to infuse the vodka, and top the cocktail with blackberry pomegranate soda instead of blood orange soda.
