Summer is officially here and my baking reflects that fact. I love all of the fresh fruits and vegetables that summertime brings almost to my doorstep. I wish I had a garden, I don’t, but farmer’s markets and roadside stands are all around.
I’d like to say that my obsession with baking with berries has to do with the 4th of July being right around the corner and it’s true that many of my creations this time of year have Independence Day in mind. But the real truth is that you can expect quite a few berry treats from me long after the colors in the sky and cordite in the air is long gone.
Today’s treat was, however, developed with Independence Day in mind. Fireworks are legal where I live and the whole street joins in the fun. When dusk approaches, I set up my kitchen island with a dessert bar. Kids and adults alike are in and out of there all night long helping themselves.
I have some favorite recipes that I put out year after year, but I always try some new ones too. This year I tried a Pavlova for the first time. I switched it up a bit to make it fit the occasion, but the first try was a hit and I’ll be recreating it for the neighbors. Please don’t be put off by the fact that the outside cracks. It’s meringue, it’s going to do that. Doesn’t deter from the taste, this Patriotic Pavlova is a keeper.
