When I read on Karen's post that someone was planning to learn how to make sushi this year, I thought, "I can teach her that!". Actually, I just learned how to do it myself on Saturday at a Parent/Child sushi class that was held in New York City. It was really simple though. I admit that my six year old (that "sponge"!) was able to do it right the first time while it took me a couple of attempts. I did it though...and so can you. I am attaching the video that I took at the event along with the written instructions below. Enjoy!
If you would like to make this fun recipe with your kids, I am sharing the written recipe below. You can switch up the ingredients to suit your tastes. For example, Michael and I made California rolls by substituting crab sticks and cucumber for the salmon. Enjoy!
uramaki (inside-out roll) recipe for kids

makes 1 roll
-vinegared rice (You can get the recipe on my sushi rice recipe post.): 1 handful
-dried seaweed (nori): 1 sheet
-sushi-grade salmon: 2-3 slices
-avocado: 2 slices
-sesame seeds: 1 tsp
-ginger (gari): 1 tbs
-genji soy sauce
1. Place nori about 1 1/2″ from bottom of bamboo mat. Spread 4/5 of the rice evenly on one side of the nori. Cover the whole surface.
2. Flip the nori over, so the rice is now facing down. The nori should still be about 1 1/2″ from the bottom of the mat.
3. Starting from the part of the nori closest to you, spread the rest of the rice, leaving about 1/3 of the surface clear at the other end.
4. Place ingredients in the center of the nori (don’t “overstuff,” or the roll won’t close).
5. Starting from the end closest to you, firmly roll the mat away from you. When you can no longer see the nori, squeeze the roll in several places, to make sure it’s tight.
6. Unroll the mat.
7. Take the roll with both hands and place it on the cutting board. Sprinkle sesame seeds on the top. Trim edges of the roll.
8. Have an adult cut the roll for you. Wet the knife – this will prevent the rice from sticking to the knife. Cut the roll in half.
9. Line up the two halves.
10. Cut the 2 rolls in half again.
11. Cut the rolls on either side of the first cut, creating 8 pieces.
12. Arrange any way you like on a serving dish.
That’s it. This is a fun meal to make with your kids. It would even make a fun “girls night in” activity for sushi fans. Do you and your kids like sushi?
