I have to admit I am not a big fan of replacing meals with smoothies, but I love them for snacks. I just don’t get that much enjoyment out of drinking a meal, plus I feel really lightheaded a few hours later.
Smoothies as a snack work well for me, especially at 4pm in the afternoon when I am starting to get hungry, and dinner is still some ways away. For me, filling up on some extra greens, fibre and protein helps me eat less at dinner, which is a good thing, especially when I eat late.
I created a low-cal, low-fat, high protein, high fibre smoothie that really packs a punch and helps me reach my macro-nutrient needs for the day. Health Canada recommends eating 21 grams of fibre and that is really hard to do! Believe me! I used to think that a big salad would take care of this requirement, but most salads only deliver around 5 – 8 grams of fibre. You can always add edemame or chickpeas to increase fibre, but veggies alone, I’m afraid, won’t cut it. The smoothie below has 22 grams of fibre, making it really easy to reach the minimum daily requirement effortlessly!
In actuality, I aim to consume 30+ grams of fibre per day whenever I can, and my Berry Spinach smoothie containing the following healthy trinity, helps me achieve that:
Dina’s High Fibre Berry Spinach Smoothie
1 cup frozen raspberries (has 8 grams of fibre alone)
1 cup packed fresh baby spinach
1 cup of filtered water
¾ scoop of Progressive Harmonized Vegan Protein Powder
1 scoop of Progressive VegeGreens
1 scoop of Renew Life Organic Clear Fibre
I like to blend the raspberries, spinach and water first until really smooth, then I add the powders and pulse until well incorporated. It’s important not to process the powders for too long so the nutritional benefits don’t get pulverized.
Here’s the nutritional value of this amazing smoothie:
Calories 254 | Fat 5 grams | Carbs 25 grams | Fibre 22 grams | Protein 24 grams
The key benefit of this smoothie is that it is laden with anti-oxidants, which we need to fight free radicals (responsible for disease and ageing). The Progressive VegeGreens contains over 60 vegetables (land and sea), including super green foods like algae, spirulina and chlorella. Probiotics, enzymes and herbal co-factors are also included in this wonderful powder. Each scoop is equivalent to 6 – 8 servings of fresh vegetables!! And, as I have mentioned before, filling up on veggies is especially important to help alkalize the body, as well as to help it detoxify naturally, increase energy, balance blood sugar, boost metabolism and promote glowing skin!
I’ll drink to that!
