I usually spend New Year’s Day daydreaming about the possibilities that might unfurl in the coming months, both known and unknown. And there’s one major known for this year: I just got a new job, as the Food section editor of BlogHer.

I’m a work-at-home mom, and much of my day is spent with my toddler. At 20 months old, his first response to anything is usually “no.” A lot of us treat new year’s resolutions the same way, with a long list of nos: no sugar, no fat, no produce that hasn’t been lovingly tended from seed to fork. (In my hometown of Berkeley, California, eating seasonally is practically a spiritual discipline.)
Even during that season of asceticism that comes every January, I prefer to say yes. Sure, I wouldn’t mind dropping a few pounds, but I must be true to who I am, which is the kind of person who figures out a way to eat pulled pork sliders for my first dinner of the year—and call it good luck.

My new year’s kitchen resolutions have more to do with the friends and memories that food conjures up than anything else. I also have a weak spot for the alchemical transformations we create in the kitchen, which brings magic—like making caramel from sugar and water—to our everyday lives.
Here's my short list for the coming year:
- Throw more impromptu get-togethers.
- Prepare toddler-friendly meals that adults can enjoy too.
- Experiment with crazy-good mocktails.
- Make my own yogurt at home.
- Get serious about meal planning, both to save time and money.
