All In The Details: Top 8 Hosting Ideas Sure to Impress

Ever find that you are wondering how to put in that one special touch here and there that will set your event apart from others that you've hosted? It all really comes down to the details! You don't have to rent a horse to escort your guests into your party (a la Bridesmaids), just try one or a couple of these special touches.

1. Make cards with cocktail recipes

Make at least three; set them out on the bar so that guests will have an idea of a cocktail they would like to make. Of course, make your guests the first one. Mix up the types of alcohol that need to be used in each recipe: from vodka to gin to whiskey.

2. When hosting overnight guests, make a welcome basket full of goodies

In a basket, include simple snacks, the local paper, a local map, brochures of nearby attractions, and bottled water. Guests may feel too timid to walk down to your kitchen in the middle of the night to grab a glass of water, or even a midnight snack, so including these items in the basket so they do not have to ask is a good idea.

3. Make something for the kids

Expecting kids? Make a simple separate menu for them, such as chicken tenders made from scratch, or simple noodles with butter or cream sauce. I’ve never met a child that did not like chicken tenders. Also, by making a separate dish for the kids, this will allow you to go all out on the food for the adults.

4. Make individual ANYTHING

When serving food at a dinner party, anything that is served or presented individually to guests looks extra special: think of mini layered desserts in large shot glasses, or cocktail shrimp in martini glasses. Or, mini vases of flowers set at each person’s setting. You get the idea...

5. Get creative by making your own napkin rings or adornment!

Think grapevine with rosemary for fall, daisies or lavender for the summer, and evergreen with berries for winter. Just wrap the stem around the napkin. For a festive holiday touch, you can also wrap a thick ribbon and bow around the napkin as seen below.

6. Light as many candles as you can

Candlelight makes everything look softer and warmer. Stock up on candle holders and wall sconces. As an alternative to real candlelight, there is the option of buying battery operated ones that flicker. These also look great!

7. Transform the staples into something sumptuous

For example, want to have friends over for some homemade pizza? Great, but make this Mushroom, Black Olive, and Arugula Pizza with Vermont Cheddar Cheese.

8. Layer, layer, layer your table for a dinner party!

Make your table top rich and full with not only plates and silverware, but think of table cloth, table runner, centerpieces, place cards, water and wine glasses.
