Who Says Golf is Boring? 2011 Season’s Already Full of Drama

If you think golf is boring, you clearly weren't following the 2011 Masters.

Going into the final day in Augusta, Ireland's Rory McIlroy looked like he owned it. He had a four stoke lead going into the final round, but his putting killed him on Sunday. If you want a green jacket you've got to have a long game and a short game.

Then it looked like Tiger Woods was going to come up and take the championship from McIlroy. Tiger had a few beautiful shots, but he couldn't bring it home either. After six three putts, Woods ended up tying for fourth place.

Jason Day had twenty-three birdies, Adam Scott came shockingly close to getting a hole in one on the 16th hole, but neither of them won either.

Who won The Masters? Mickelson? Els? Garcia?

None of those guys even finished in the top 20.

No, a 26-year-old named Charl Schwartzel is going back to South Africa with a green jacket and $1,440,000. It was only Schwartzel's second time playing in The Masters and he did so as if he had played the course a thousand times.

He also gave SportCenter an excuse to say "Charl in Charge". I bet they've had that on a post-it note on their big board ever since Schwartzel joined the PGA.

In true Masters style, the event was called out for discrimination in a back-stage brouhaha. Sports reporter Tara Sullivan was denied access to the locker room for a post-tournament interview for having the audacity to be a woman. Of course, later Augusta National apologized claiming it was a mistake and Augusta National gives equal access to all reporters. The security guard must have been confused and thought she wanted to be a member.

*smirk*

Oh, yes, ladies. Augusta National does not allow female members yet. Apparently it is still 1906 in Augusta, Georgia.

But back to golf...

The PGA is insane people. For a sport that Mark Twain once referred to as "A good walk spoiled." lately there is hardly a dull moment. Did you know that in the last ten major golf events there have been ten different winners? Seven of those gentlemen had never won a major before. These are exciting times for golf.
