Whitney Houston touched me deeply with a Song!

Don’t we all struggle this one?

“Greatest Love Of All”

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can’t take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

And if by chance, that special place
That you’ve been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

I have always loved the song above.  I think the message is beautiful.  It was written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed for a biography film for Muhammad Ali.  It was originally recorded in 1977 by George Benson. (source Wikipedia) I think we all know it was Whitney Houston that made this song a hit.  With the beautiful words, arrangement and her golden voice the song soared.

We want to believe the “Greatest gift of all is easy to achieve Learning to love yourself is the Greatest Gift of all” but deep down many of us know that is the hardest thing in the world.   We are our harshest critics.  We beat ourselves up.  We strive for perfection.  We expect to never fail.  We never forgive ourselves for our horrible mistakes.  We beat the shit out of ourselves and some of us choose do destructive things to ourselves to dull our pain.  Drugs, anorexia, over eating and over working to reach unobtainable goals because we refuse to love ourselves warts and all.

We all make our mistakes.  We fail.  We hurt people.  We have our bad moments but we also have our good.  This striving for perfection or even expecting perfection in those around us is killing many, in many different ways.

Learning to love yourself is a good start.  It helps with learning to love others around you.  Warts and all.  And, accepting that some people are not your problem but that doesn’t mean you have to hate them.  It has taken me a long time to come to some of these conclusions but I could no longer go around hating and I feel pity for those people who choose hate and refuse to see that others are not perfect but I really don’t focus on others in that manner anymore.

It is funny Learning to Love myself has helped me view the world differently and change.  I am glad I am a person that grows and changes!!  You have to be willing to examine yourself, own up to mistakes and change!!But we all know many people think they are perfect and always right. They justify even when in the wrong.  You know, they will kind of say they are wrong but then go on to tell you why it wasn’t really and truly their fault!   Typically these type of people never grow or change and live kind of sad and pathetic lives!  Worse, the people in their lives get dragged into the cycle.

Part of my growth has been to stay away from such negative forces as much as possible.  Surround yourself with positive people.  People who encourage love, respect and understand that mistakes happen.  These type of people love themselves and they encourage growth.  You learn from failure and mistakes ONLY if you acknowledge them and own them AND MOVE FORWARD!!

You need to surround yourself with people who respect honesty over constant lying, even constant little white lies add up.  Lying is a negative force and it covers up mistakes.  It creates issues!! One of the worst is it creates an atmosphere of distrust among all the people in the web of the lying!!  You know, sometimes It easier to say, “I don’t like Tupperware parties so I will skip it” then to make up excuses and then get caught.  Or, if you don’t want to say, “I don’t like such and such”, then, just say,” no I won’t be coming.”  You don’t always need to make up an excuse.  You end up hurting the person’s feelings and for what? In addition, you are learning to be true to yourself.  After a while people catch on to all your little white lies and then you become an  untrustworthy person.  You create your own reputation and you can’t say, “Oh, I only tell white lies but I tell the truth on important things.”  Deep down people begin to wonder what you consider important?  Slippery slope. Let’s face it, people who lie, thinks everyone is like them and lies.  A vicious circle.   What is funny, I have always been proud that my friends have said, “You know Lucy is brutal but I can count on her to tell me what she really thinks.”   Some of you might think that is wrong.  I don’t.  I am proud my friends can count on my HONEST answer.  They know I don’t blow bullshit up their ass.  I am not rude.  But they know they can count on me to say, “Yeah, no, I wouldn’t wear that out, it does make your butt look big.”  If they ask!  I won’t just blurt it out, see there is a difference! Now, I am human, I will not deliberately hurt someone.  If a friend is all excited about a brand new coat they just bought and they are showing it off then by all means I ooh and ahh over it, they are not asking my honest opinion at that point, big difference. You have to read the situation.

In the end, I think learning to love yourself is hard. I think it It takes years and years.  It takes a person willingness to grow and I do think it helps that I had a good foundation.  I only hope and pray I have passed on this foundation to my children. Only time will tell.

The children are our future but if we don’t get IT we can seriously mess the CHILDREN up! We need to work on us and pass it on!! We need to love ourselves.  Honesty, respect, and understanding we make mistakes are all places to start!
