It’s that time of year again: All the broadcast networks are rolling out their new prime time programming. Some are derivative of past years' hits and some have a dash of originality, but at the end of the day, the whole TV tapestry starts to feel like Frankenstein, where pieces of tropical islands are sewn together with mobsters, detectives and aliens -- all hoping desperately for a visit from the Nielsen ratings fairy.
This week we are trying to see which of the new fall prime TV shows are popular with the BlogHer community. Following is a brief description for 10 of them, and if you want recaps and additional information (including pictures and video), see the new season rundown on my site, The Flaming Nose.
The Arrow (CW): Wednesdays at 8pm
Billionaire playboy and superhero Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) saves the day.
Beauty and the Beast (CW): Thursdays at 9pm
Part cop show, part Incredible Hulk. Stars Kristin Kreuk as Detective Chandler.
The Mindy Project (Fox): Tuesdays at 9:30pm
Comedy starring Mindy Kaling (The Office) as a successful doctor who is unlucky in love.
The Mob Doctor (Fox): Mondays at 9pm
Young surgeon played by Jordana Spiro makes a deal with the devil: To pay off her brother’s gambling debts, she agrees to work for the mob. (I’m surprised she isn't doing this to pay off her medical school debts.)
Last Resort (ABC): Thursdays at 8pm
The crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine goes rogue and ends up (where else) on a tropical island. Starring a large cast of actors you’ve probably never heard of before.
The Neighbors (ABC): Wednesdays at 9:30pm
The folks next door in this gated community are really out of this world. This comedy where the neighbors really are aliens has quirky potential. Starring Jami Gertz.
Elementary (CBS): Thursdays at 10pm
A Sherlock Holmes spin set in New York City, starring Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) as Holmes -- and inspired casting with Lucy Liu as Watson, this one-hour drama will hit the ground running. Also features Irish-American actor Aidan Quinn.
Made in Jersey (CBS): Fridays at 9pm
A working class local girl (Janet Montgomery) competes at a prestigious Manhattan law firm. Also stars Golden Globe-winning actor Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Portlandia). This one has solid credentials; too bad it's scheduled on Friday night (where programs go to die).
Animal Practices (NBC): Wednesdays at 8pm
A family comedy set in a veterinary clinic, this one stars the very talented and funny Justin Kirk (Weeds, Angels in America). Cute critters and a solid cast … I’ll be there with bells on!
Revolution (NBC): Mondays at 10pm
This one has the most impressive pedigree of the whole bunch. It’s a J.J. Abrams (Lost) production and it stars Billy Burke (Twilight saga). Revolution is another apocalyptic drama about Americans trying to survive, 15 years after the power goes out forever. Let’s all watch it with the lights turned off!
