Want to Win Women and Minorities? The GOP Needs Better Policy, Not PR

It can't be easy being a Republican man, with all the women and minorities (or is it people of color?) getting offended all the time. Politico reports that Speaker of the House John Boehner is holding training sessions to help GOP leaders communicate with women.

Politico reports:

“Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. Read more: I can see why the Republicans want to prevent some of the gaffes from the 2012 campaign season. Who can forget Mitt Romney's "binders full of women" or Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin's "legitimate rape" comments? Not surprisingly, the concept is being mocked mercilessly on Twitter:

The Internet has barely settled down after the Grand Old Party's tone-deaf Thanksgiving Day tweet which not only celebrated civil rights leader Rosa Parks, but credited her for "ending racism".

BlogHer's Love & Sex editor Feminista Jones responded on Twitter with the #RacismEndedWhen hashtag which went viral. http://www.msnbc.com/melissa-harris-perry/gop-proclaims-the-end-racism

It's a good thing that 2013 has been the year of the post-mortem for the Republican Party, and that many of their concerns focus on attracting female, black, Latino and Asian voters. After all, 55% of women, 93% of blacks, 73% of Asians, and 71% of Latinos. But maybe the Republican Party's real problem is not one of public relations or social media… but policy? I hope they'll see that voters aren't simply swayed by soundbites and tweets, but by laws that make sense. And if they're really serious about being a party that represents issues of all genders and races, they shouldn't have John Boehner leading these lessons, but perhaps women and people of color who are already in the ranks of the Republican Party.
