The rumors are true. Well, one rumor. Everyone cries when they are interviewed by Barbara Walters. Or, at least Oprah did even though she said she really didn't want to do so. In the interview set to air tonight, Oprah let down her guard and talked about herself and her relationships, something we don't always get to hear about as she's usually doing the interviewing.
Barbara asked Oprah about her friendship with Gayle King -- Oprah's long-time BFF. I think Barbara was surprised by the reaction she got as well as the answer. I got kind of misty-eyed, too.
I mean, wouldn't you want your best friend to say this about you?
“She is the mother I never had. She is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend everybody deserves. I don’t know a better person.”
Oprah then explained that her tears were because she has never really said those words to Gayle. Which made me think: Have I told my best friend that I love her? If I have, when was it last that I said so? Have I reminded her? So then I cried, too. Thanks, Oprah.
She then explained that the rumors that she and Gayle are Super Secret Lovers irritates her because, as she she points out, she doesn't lie. Nor would she hide it if it was true. "That's not how I run my life."
Except... she's apparently still with Stedman! Color me shocked! In fact, Barbara was shocked as well. Stedman has been so far off the Oprah-radar for so long that I assumed he was taking underwater basketweaving classes in a far off land.
Okay. I get it. She was tired of the exploitative rumors and stories every time they showed up in public together, so now they just don't show up in public together. That's not a lie. That's just recognizing the issue and owning your privacy. And she says of her "love, lover, partner" this amazing little bit:
"I do not know of another man on this planet who could have lived this life with such dignity."
And so, the question is not really whether you're watch the Barbara Walters interview with Oprah tonight (Thursday) at 9pm (though you can tell us if you will), but this: Have you told your best friend how much you love her/him? Have you told your partner how much you appreciate who they have been in your life journey? Don't do it because Oprah did it. Do it because those in your life deserve to hear what they mean to you.
And pass the tissues while you're at it.
