Ten Great Break-Up Songs: I'm Getting Divorced, That Makes Me An Expert

If you've read my personal blog, Mommy Wants Vodka, you probably know that I'm going through the Big D (or The D Word, as I like to call it). If you don't read my personal blog, let me fill you in: I'm getting divorced. It's been a challenging time - with three kids, a house, and moving out on my own for the first time (ever), this has been a particularly HARD time. Probably one of the worst so far.

The one thing that's kept me sane, beyond blogging through it, is the one thing I can ALWAYS fall back upon: music. And I have.

Here are ten of the best breakup songs EVER.

1) James Blunt - Goodbye, My Lover

I remember many years ago when I first heard the song. I was happily married with Baby #2 on the way and listening to the song, I wept. Probably from the pregnancy hormones, but that's neither here nor there. I thought, "Man, I kinda WANT to have a breakup so I can blast this song out of the windows of my car." Little did I know...

2) Coldplay - The Scientist:

Normally, I'd rather chew glass than listen to anything sung by Chris Martin, but this song reminds me so much of my life that I can't help but listen to it and think, "damn, this guy totally gets how hard this breakup stuff is."

3) Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah

Mr. Cohen has been one of my favorite singer/songwriters since I was a wee lass, and this song has genuinely saved my life more than once. It reminds me so very much of my broken marriage and heart.

4) Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry

Most of the time, Fergie annoys me to no end, but this song reminds me both to accept that even the best plans we can make can go wrong. It also reminds me that I'm going to be okay, which, I know, sounds dumb, but honestly, "It'll be okay" is about the only thing keeping me going.

5) Christina Aguilera - Beautiful

One thing that no one tells you about divorce is that your self-esteem, no matter how amicable the divorce is, will take a major hit. It can become hard to see the path, where you are going, and if you're going to end up on your feet. Christina got married when I did, and seperated approximately when I did, too. This song just reminds me that I have to keep my chin up, no matter how difficult it may be.

6) Britney Spears - Everytime

No song list would be complete without my girl Britney. When this song came out, I was nearly married. Now that I'm getting the divorce, I understand the song more and more. It's heartbreaking.

7) Velvet Revolver - Fall To Pieces

While the video may remind you that "drugs are bad, kids," it's a great song. Haunting and sad, both of the feelings I've grown so accustomed to. It reminds me so very much of how I feel about moving on with my life.

8) Amy Winehouse - Back To Black

When Amy Winehouse died, it was like reliving every loss I'd ever felt - she was someone whom I felt connected to, someone I could've been friends with. I'd never expected to feel such a connection to this particular song until the divorce was brought up. Now, it's on every playlist I own.

9) Guns 'n Roses - November Rain

I've loved G'nR so much for so long that I actually went to see them when they "returned" for awhile. Which means I got to see this song IN PERSON. There's NOTHING not incredible about this song. It's a perfect break-up song. If there is such a thing.

10) Elvis Costello - A Good Year For The Roses

Now, Allison was the song that made Mr. Costello famous, but I'll be honest: this is - hands-down - my favorite breakup song. It's haunting, true, and if you've been in a long-term relationship, you can hear it and immediately relate. That, to me, a great song makes.
