Sister Wives?

There's a new show on TLC called Sister Wives, about a polygamist family. There's the Dad, 3 wives, and 12 kids with one on the way. I'm super easy going with the lifestyles of other people. If this is what these people truly want, that's all fine with me. All of the wives grew up in this type of family, so they knew what they were doing. None of them were child brides and anything like that. And shockingly enough, the kids seem well adjusted and happy. They don't know anything different (the first child wasn't born until the man already had the 3 wives), so there isn't any reason for them to think their lives are bizarre.

What I just don't understand, is the point of it all. Why on earth would a man want 3 wives? So many men in this world fight tooth and nail to keep from having just one. And why would a woman be ok with sharing her husband? Obviously their religious (fundamentalist Mormon, big surprise) beliefs play a big part. The wives on series are all pretty different, which I found interesting. The first wife has just 1 child, and is going back to school now. The second wife has 5, and she works full time. The third is pregnant and has 5 children, and she's the "domestic one" who watches all of the little ones during the day (while the older ones go to school. No, they aren't home schooled. Wow!). The dad is in sales or something, and sales must be very good, as he drives a Lexus sports car.

One thing did rub me the wrong way. While explaining the sleeping arrangements (each woman has her own room, he switches off), one of the wives says, "We don't go weird", I'm assuming to assure the viewer that there is no girl/girl action. Lady, you DO do weird. You share your husband with 2 other women. That's not typical in our society. You cannot expect people to accept your lifestyle if you're calling another "weird".

SPOILER ALERT, the guy is now courting a 4th wife. And the ladies are none too happy about it! Big surprise. Not sure if I'll keep watching the show, I swore to myself after John and Kate Plus 8, I wouldn't watch TLC anymore, since really they're just the Enquirer of TV. But it could be a train wreck, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to see that. I'm not a perfect person.
