Sarah Dessen's What Happened to Goodbye is the Perfect Summer Read

There are certain authors for me that just scream summer. Sometimes it's because it's when I first read their work. Sometimes it's because their books just demand to be read while lounging in a hammock or by the pool. For me, Sarah Dessen is one of those authors and I'm thrilled that her newest novel, What Happened to Goodbye is the first book of the summer for BlogHer Book Club.

I didn't know it at the time but I was first introduced to Dessen's via the 2003 movie, How to Deal, starring Mandy Moore. It was based on not one but two of Dessen's novels -- Someone Like You and That Summer. It would be three years before I read one of Dessen's novels and a bit longer before I made the connection between the movie and those books. I've read most of Dessen's books now and I'm starting to hoard the ones that I haven't, saving them for vacations or when I just need a really good book read.

When I started reading What Happened to Goodbye I was reminded about why I like Sarah Dessen. Her characters feel like they could be real people. While reading this novel I felt like I could head on down to Lakeview and walk into the Luna Blu and get myself some fried pickles. If I had been a local I'm sure I would have lamented the loss of the rolls along with Iris. And I would have oohed and aahed over the miniature of the town. It isn't just that you feel like any of this could be real, it's that you want it to be.

That's the magic of a Sarah Dessen novel.

I hope that you will join us for the next month as we discuss What Happened to Goodbye and collectively fight off (or cave to) our fried pickle cravings.
