If you tune in to morning news, you may be aware of the Metz Fresh, LLC, voluntary recall of bagged spinach as a result of a positive test for Salmonella found during routine company testing. But the spinach recall is only one occurrence of several Salmonella scares across the country, dating to May, 2007. A company release says there have been no reports of illness or problems related to the Metz Fresh spinach.
The Centers for Disease Control is currently collaborating with public health officials in Pennsylvania and other state health departments and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund infections in humans. This outbreak seems to be associated with households where pets have eaten dry dog food.
