In a teeter-totter of an Ohio state primary, Mitt Romney edged ahead of a "resurgent" Rick Santorum for that state's Republican nomination for president, with 38 percent of the vote to Santorum's 37%. The drawn-out election count had tweeters pointing at the clock and speculating on the possibility of a recount.
Romney led in early returns, was surpassed by Santorum midway through Tuesday night, and crept back into the lead; around 12:30 EST this morning, The Associated Press and CNN declared Romney the winner. But his win is still so narrow that The New York Times was still calling it an "apparent" victory this morning -- and Ohio elected official (and BlogHer Contributing Editor) Jill Miller Zimon wasn't the only one tweeting the word "Florida" last night.
Romney claimed clear Super Tuesday wins in Massachusetts, Virginia, Vermont, Idaho, and Alaska, while Santorum took Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Tennessee. Romney is also leading in Wyoming, which is in the middle of a multiday caucus. Gingrich won his home state of Georgia; Ron Paul did not take a state, but did pick up a larger-than-expected 40% of the vote in Virginia, where he and Romney were the only two candidates on the ballot.
Romney now has 415 delegates. Santorum has 176, Gingrich has 105, and Paul trails with 46. A candidate needs 1,144 delegates to win the Republican nomination for president. (That's right: We're not even halfway through.)

Gov Romney has started trying to appeal to small donors. The good thing for Mitt is that, from his perspective, everybody is a small donor.

If Santorum hadn't lost unmarried women to Romney 45-28, he'd have carried Ohio. No wonder Rush rails v. single women.
— Joan Walsh (@joanwalsh) March 7, 2012
OH is showing Santorum's organizational weakness, and showing Romney's plain and simple weakness. God help us.
